Date Nut Candy
Put sugar in 3 quart sauce pan. Add water and pinch of salt and cream of tartar. Stir until sugar is dissolved. Boil until syrup forms soft ball or until it forms a hair when dripped off spoon. Remove from heat and add dates. Cook until sugar is colored (dark). Remove from heat and add chopped nuts, butter and vanilla.
Have clean linen dish clothes wet with cold water and spread on table or kitchen counter.
Heat candy until real hard to stir or beat. Pour out on wet cloth in long roll. Work candy by placing wet cloth on top and smoothing in round or square shape the size you want the pieces to be. Let cool slightly and cut. Place on wax paper or buttered dishes.
